Techniques for Cultivating Executive Presence

In Las Vegas, I shared these five tips for honing executive presence.

1. Speak with confidence and authority.

   Practice modifying your speech to gain the trust of others by showing your own confidence. Record yourself speaking normally as you explain a great idea you have. Then envision how a powerful executive would share the same idea. Try to use that cadence and language when delivering your message.

2. Share your expertise in meetings.

   Look for ways to weave your expertise into the conversation naturally as you peruse the agenda for an upcoming meeting. If someone says he needs help in an area you know a lot about, volunteer at the meeting to assist him. You’ll solidify the image of yourself as an authority for everyone who is present. If you can do this at high-level meetings, so much the better. The more face-time you get with powerful leaders, the more likely you’ll be invited to the table.

3. Consider how you would communicate your full worth to others.

   Write down three to five of your key contributions to your company. Then write down specific deliverables that demonstrate each of those contributions. Practice articulating those points succinctly, the way you’d explain them to a top-level leader, so you can speak off the cuff to highlight the value you bring when the opportunity arises.

4. Take on challenging projects.

   If you’ve been in a rut, expand your own job description by tackling more ambitious projects. If you’ve been itching to demonstrate your leadership skills, volunteer to assemble a task force to take on a prestigious project. Make sure your goals are achievable, while pushing you to stretch your capabilities and step outside of your comfort zone. Practice delegating clearly and checking in with team members to make sure the work flows smoothly.

5. Take a risk.

   Have you noticed any opportunities where, if a risky but viable course of action panned out, you could raise your profile greatly? If so, consider delving in. Talk with your boss to share your rationale and gain support for your idea—that way, everyone will go in with open eyes.
